English version

The predicted weather for Sunday, the 26.10.14 was perfect for a hike into the high and cold glaciers in the northwest of Iceland. In reason of this, we went to the so called 'Ok' (pronounced: Og) glacier, next to Langjökull and Eiríksjökull. The smallest of this 3 ones and the smallest glacier of Iceland as well.

But, let's start with the trip: We went in the morning from Rvk. along the ring road 1 to the north and made a turn near Borganes to the east. We reached the last part of the valley of this fantastic area with all these nice glaciers at 11:15 a.m. and started our trip at 11:30 a.m.

Before we started, we had to ask a warden lady of the ability and the length of our hike. She said, you will may need 7 h - up and down. Hence, we started our trip and reached after 1 h the first passage in the wide area of the 'Ok' mountain. We're not sure, if we saw the top, but we just started to walk in the direction of the high elevation. We had to cross a brook of a small, frozen lake. Anders passed in front of me this brook. Suddenly, there was a dull sound of a crack. And directly ahead of me, the ice of the brook and the sidearm of the lake broke apart. That was an amazing, exciting and scarifying moment. The duration was more than 1 minute. When it stopped, we all passed this crazy passage. At half past two, we made our first break, the top was still far away.

We set a deadline at 3:30 to turn around because of the early darkness at half past 5 in the evening. As expected, at 3:30 p.m., we were still far away from the smallest glacier of Íceland. We were to slow because of the constantly deep snow. In addition, we recognized that we had drifted far away from the top. The reason was, we followed the whole time our instinct and thoughts that the top is infallible (we didn't use a compass and the maps were really worse...).

Frustrated about the fail of our hike, we went back to the car. On the way back, Sebastian got lost in one moment. He fell down a snowbank, but luckily, nothing happened. We reached it at 6 p.m. and started the way back to Reykjavík. We learned a lot and had a nice view every time, but the end was unfortunately very unpleasant. But we will come back to finish this trip, of course.

The pictures of the trip can be seen right here.

Overall distance of our hike was about 20 km.
