Nach der letzten großen Gruppen Geländeexkursion, sind wir an diesem Wochenende mit der Arbeitsgruppe der Glaziologie und Glaziogeologie zu Islands Süden aufgebrochen. Dort diskutierten und besuchten wir die letzten großen Gletscher Sólheimajökull, Steinsholtsjökull und Gígjökull. Die zwei letztgenannten befinden sich als Fortsätze des Eyjafjallajökull im Tal zwischen den Gebirgen Eyjafjallajökull und Tindfjöll (weiterverfolgend der Straße 249).
Am 09.05. (Samstag) begaben wir uns zu Steinsholtsjökull und Gígjökull und durchsprachen Endmoränen, Sander und Rückzugsverhalten der jeweiligen Gletscher im Sinne der Geologie. Auch am Sonntagmorgen führten wir dies durch. Später am Nachmittag begaben wir uns auf den Sólheimajökull, um eine Seilmessung zur jährlichen Bewertung des Gletscherschmelzverhaltens zu installieren. Dabei bohrten wir mittels Dampfbohrung in die Ablationszone des Gletschers. Im kommenden Frühjahr wird die nächste Gruppe die verbliebene Länge des Metallseiles im Loch messen und Aussagen zum Schmelzverhalten des Gletschers treffen können. Am Abend ging es per Bus zurück nach Reykjavík.

After the last big group field trip (the “Winter Mountaineering”), now there was one academically field trip with the lecture Glaciology. We had been heading to the south of Iceland to different glacier types and three different glaciers: the well-known Sólheimajökull and the two glaciers Steinsholtsjökull and Gígjökull in the valley between Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjöll (Continuation of road 249).
The Saturday was marked by a relatively glacial geological part, containing the description of the different types of end moraines, sander and glacier retreats. This was as well the main content in the morning of Sunday. In the afternoon, we went on the Sólheimajökull to drill (by steam drilling) a measurement hole for the evaluation of glacier shrinking for the next year. In the hole, we installed a metal wire, of which we measured the length. In the next spring, the next group will measure the remaining length of the wire in the hole. Afterwards, we went back to Reykjavík.
